Advancing Science Through International Mentorship
The NCSA International Research Internship Program is a 10-week summer program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). This program is an opportunity for international students to conduct interdisciplinary research under the mentorship of NCSA research staff and Illinois faculty using advanced digital resources to address research challenges for the benefit of science and society.

Program Highlights
- Work on cutting-edge projects
- Work with world-class NCSA researchers and Illinois faculty
- Work on interdisciplinary and socially-impactful research projects
- Participate in social activities, networking and professional development events that will be held jointly with other other two NCSA’s successful student programs, SPIN and REU FoDDOMaT
- Participate in weekly professional development seminars with other STEM intents on the U of I campus
Eligibility Criteria
- International students enrolled full-time in U.S. universities (F-1 visa students)
- Foreign students enrolled full-time in degree-granting universities and colleges in their home countries (J-1 scholars)
- Enrolled in any year of undergraduate studies
- In good academic standing
- Demonstrated English proficiency via TOEFL IBT, IELTS, or Skype interview for J-1 Scholars
- TOEFL or IELTS scores must be less than two years old (score report must be provided)
- Illinois Guidelines for Assessment of English Language Proficiency
Applicants need to demonstrate the following through the personal statement letters and letters of recommendation:
- Interest in conducting interdisciplinary research
- Desire to learn and actively collaborate as a part of a team
- Some professional work or volunteer experience that demonstrates the applicant’s understanding of professional working environments
- Software programming experience, for example, in classes or through work on software projects
Students interested in this opportunity will not be able to take academic courses simultaneously with this program as they will be expected to work 40 hours weekly. Students must demonstrate English proficiency to participate in research and professional development activities. The program will culminate with final presentations by all students. Students will be responsible for program fees.
